Philippine Standard Time:

A door of opportunity just opened up for a Catandunganon baller.

Kier Arvin Manlangit of Simamla, Virac, Catanduanes started to play basketball at age 13 hoping to fulfill a father-son shared dream of becoming a PBA player. He may be one step closer into that dream.

Ateneo de Naga University offered Catanduanes secondary basketball big man Manlangit scholarship grant inclusive of free tuition and free lodging after a standout 32-point semifinals performance against Naga City.

Despite losing by three points after being down by as large as 25 points, one coaching staff of Ateneo de Naga University and a scout of University of Santo Thomas Legazpi caught attention of Manlangit’s offensive and defensive plays and offered him scholarship grants.

Manalangit was surprised with the kind of offer he received.

“Nabigla man ako ta dai ko man ngani isi kung pila na score ko, basta nagkawat sana ako”, said Manlangit.

Manlangit was one of two players in double digit scoring 32 points complimented by 6 steals and five rebounds all in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter.

THE BRAVE COMEBACK ATTEMPT

Trailing by 14 points with 1:40 left in the clock, Manlangit boost a late 14-4 comeback run grabbing five boards, and four steals to cut the lead to nine points,81-72.

While slashing through the defense, Catanduanes guard, Gerald Marquez got fouled and splits the charity, 81-73. Manlangit once again picked up another steal and score on the other end 81-75. The Simamla based big man was again fouled and successfully make two free throws 81-79.

With six seconds left in the clock, shooting guard Alvin Ticson made a three pointer to edge closer to the host city, 83-82.

Unfortunately Catanduanes was called with an unsportsmanlike foul. Naga City completed two free throws, ending the game 85-82.

“Talagang nag-change yung momentum, gumanda yung trapping nila. Natalo kami sa sipag at aggressiveness at perseverance ng Catanduanes”, said Nuki Sabio, coach of team Naga City.

ON HIS THIRD

“Nanginayang ako sir ta diit na sana pwede mi na igana”, Manlangit lamented.

This is the third time Manlangit joined the Palarong Bicol and to him this is the most special of his three.

“Ibang iba ini sir ta nakalaog kami sa semis. Kang mga nakaagi sa inot pa sana takdag na kami”, Manlangit added.

Manlangit is hoping that for next year, they will be given more time to prepare and to train. He is also hoping that he would have a chance to play in the Palarong Pambansa.
